Top five moments from early years in Tampa

1. Going 26-for-33 to end his high school career at Plant in 1976.

2. As a junior, Boggs hits .522 and leads Plant to the Class 4A state semifinals, where it loses 2-0 to Miami Carol City.

3. Getting flattened during his junior year by Brandon defensive end David Galloway, who went on to play in the NFL. The hit leads to 39 stitches in Boggs' chin and ends his career as a quarterback. As a senior, Boggs confines his football duties to kicking, which lead him to all-state honors and help keep him safe for baseball.

4. As a 15-year-old in a senior league, Boggs gets angry after being called out on strikes and throws his bat against a fence. His father and coach, Win, benches him for the next game. The lesson is learned: Controlling your emotions is an important part of the game. Boggs never throws his bat again.

5. Playing sandlot and Little League baseball on Davis Islands. Boggs is the kid who always hits the home runs into Tampa Bay.
