HSN discovery Esteban hopes to bring Red Rocks concert to TV

John Tesh staged a popular concert video for the Yanni/PBS-extravaganza set at Denver's scenic Red Rocks Amphitheater a decade ago. Now it's going to be Esteban, the infomercial pop music phenom who went big-time through HSN.

The classically trained guitarist, who parlayed sales from his HSN appearances into a CD and video that hit No. 2 on the Billboard New Age music charts, hopes to air the two-hour concert over public TV or a cable network this fall. Many PBS stations broadcast his last concert, which doubled as a public TV fundraiser thanks to video sales.

Esteban (real name Stephen Paul) was discovered as an Arizona hotel lounge act by HSN gadget guru Joy Mangano, creator of the Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers. She gave him a new name and dressed him in black, sort of like Roy Orbison, accented with a leather flamenco hat. In addition to his music, Esteban sells a line of inexpensive guitars and lessons over the TV shopping network.

The Aug. 10 Red Rocks concert will be 80 percent original music backed by Esteban's eight-piece band plus a sitar, a tabla and an appearance by a rumba flamenco dancer.

Esteban chose not to charge admission at Red Rock (www.estebanmusic.com for information, which holds 9,000 people.

"It wouldn't be right to charge people to be in the audience for an infomercial," he said.
