KETTERING, Ohio - Allen Doyle shattered the U.S. Senior Open final-round record Sunday, closing with 8-under 63 to win his third major championship.
Doyle had a bogey-free round that included eight birdies, and he managed to avoid the trouble that knocked Craig Stadler (76-278) and Loren Roberts, the third-round co-leaders by three, as well as D.A. Weibring and others out of contention. His final round, which beat the course record by one, was the lowest by a Senior Open winner.
Doyle beat the final-round score by four and finished at 10-under 274, one shot ahead of Roberts (73) and Weibring (70). The victory, worth $470,000, was his 10th on the Champions Tour.
Korean wins British Open
SOUTHPORT, England - Jeong Jang shot 3-under 69 to win the Women's British Open by four strokes, while Annika Sorenstam's quest for her third major title of the year ended with a fifth-place finish.
The South Korean, who led after each round at Royal Birkdale, was six strokes ahead at the turn on the way to the first victory of her six-year LPGA career.
Jang finished at 16-under 272 and Sophie Gustafson, winner here in 2000 before the championship became a major, shot 67-276. Sorenstam, who began the day tied for second at 8 under, shot 71 to finish 9-under 279. Her day ended with double bogey on the 18th hole.
Michelle Wie, the 15-year-old amateur playing her final event before returning to high school in Hawaii, birdied the last two holes for 69-278 and a tie for third.
EUROPEAN PGA: Australia's Mark Hensby beat Henrik Stenson with par on the second playoff hole in Stockholm to win the Scandinavian Masters for his first European tour victory. Both finished regulation at 22-under 262 after final-round 65s. Stenson appeared to have clinched the title when he eagled the 17th to move two shots clear of Hensby. Hensby, a PGA Tour regular, sank birdies in the rain on the last two holes, his second from about 8 yards, to force a playoff.
NATIONWIDE TOUR: Joe Daley, 44, holed a 4-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the Wichita Open in Kansas. Daley had four birdies on the back nine to finish 6-under 65 and head to a playoff with Shane Bertsch. Both players shot 16-under 268 to earn the playoff by one stroke.
FUTURES TOUR: Kim Brozer of Red Deer, Alberta, finished 70-202 and won by two strokes at the M&T Bank Loretto Classic in Syracuse, N.Y. Clearwater's Jenny Gleason tied for seventh with 68-208 to take a $1,820 purse, and Kelly Lagedrost of Brooksville shot 1-under 70 to tie for 40th with 215.
