East Lake faced Coral Springs Sunday morning, but when the game was delayed in the third inning with East Lake leading 9-0, Coral Springs decided to pack it up and forfeit.
"I know they were running very low on pitching," East Lake manager Manuel Franco said. "They had already checked out of their hotel, so I guess they just figured they didn't have a chance."
Cocoa led Braden River 2-1 in the fourth in the other semifinal before rain halted play. They'll finish at 4 p.m. today at Knology Park; East Lake faces the winner half an hour after that one ends.
9-10 BASEBALL: Seminole secured a semifinal spot with an 11-1 win against Woodville. Seminole plays tonight at 7 in DeBary.
MAJOR BASEBALL: Palm Harbor lost its first game of the postseason, 4-3 to Destin, despite two home runs from Casey Turgeon, who has nine homers in 10 tournament games this summer. Palm Harbor faces Maitland at noon today in Haines City.
Bloomingdale still perfect
ST. PETERSBURG - Shortstop Jennifer Owens and first baseman Devyn White led the offense and Alexa Lopez threw a no-hitter in Bloomingdale's 12-0 win over Alabama on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the Little League Southern Region tournament at Arnold S. White Stadium in St. Petersburg.
"Anytime you can go 3-0 in pool play and end up with a No.1 seed - ultimately, what more can you ask from the girls?," Bloomingdale coach Jeff Carter said.
Bloomingdale starter Alexa Lopez went the distance in the four-inning game (shortened by the mercy rule). Lopez struck out six and walked just one.
Owens went 1-for-2 with three RBIs; White was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.
