$2.6-million bid approval paves way for road project

The Hernando County Commission approved a $2.6-million bid Tuesday that paves the way for the widening of Northcliffe Boulevard.
In selecting the bid by Southwest Contracting of Odessa, county commissioners followed the recommendation of Purchasing and Contracts Director James Gantt.
The project will widen and resurface Northcliffe from Arora Road to Mariner Boulevard, and convert the existing two-lane rural road to a five-lane urban road with curb, gutter and sidewalk. Construction is expected to start soon and end in about a year.
Sen. Paula Dockery's aides to hold office day Tuesday
BROOKSVILLE - Laura Arnolds-Patron and Victoria Marshall, legislative aides for State Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, will hold an office day at the Hernando County Building in Brooksville on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Staff will be available in the County Commission conference room to answer residents' questions, concerns and comment.
Dockery represents Senate District 15, which includes parts of Polk, Hernando, Osceola, Sumter and Lake counties. Anyone who would like to schedule an appointment, should call the district office at (863) 413-2900.
While in Brooksville, Arnolds-Patron and Marshall will also visit with local business professionals.
Cough up Fur Ball support to show you love animals
SPRING HILL - The Humane Society of the Nature Coast needs sponsors for its annual Fur Ball, which will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Palace Grand, off Commercial Way.
The event will include dinner, entertainment and an auction. It will also celebrate the Humane Society's 40th anniversary in Hernando County. Ball tickets are $75, and sponsorships cost $750.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the orphaned pets at the Humane Society shelter in Brooksville. For information and sponsorship details, call Joanne Schoch at 232-3032.
How to make landscapes - and love - really last
The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will offer two classes:
Right Plant Right Place will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Forest Oaks Government Center, 7479 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. Learn how proper placement of plants in the right environment will lead to a cost-efficient landscape. Questions will be answered. No registration is required for this free class; seating is first come, first served. For information or directions, call 754-4433.
Before You Tie The Knot, a marriage preparation class, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 22 and 23 at the extension service office at 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville. Couples must attend both sessions to receive a certificate of completion. The registration fee is $10 a couple and the deadline is Aug. 15. The two classes will also be held Oct. 24 and 25 at the same location. The deadline for the $10 registration fee is Oct. 17. Upon completion of a marriage preparation class there will be a $32.50 discount on the marriage license, and the waiting period required for applying for a license will be waived. The class has been approved by the circuit courts of Hernando, Citrus and Pasco counties. To receive a registration form, call 754-4433.
Parrott Middle School bids hello Thursday
BROOKSVILLE - Parrott Middle School, 19220 Youth Drive, will have an open house from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
Parents and students may visit the school to receive the class schedule and other pertinent information. In addition, each team and/or grade level will host an open house within the first 10 days of school, when parents will have an opportunity to visit their children's teachers. Brooksville animal shelter needs volunteers' help
BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County SPCA needs dedicated volunteers to work a morning, afternoon or an entire day once a week to give love and attention to abandoned animals. Nominations for Great Brooksvillian are sought
BROOKSVILLE - As part of Brooksville's Founders Week Celebration, Oct. 15 through Oc. 22, the city is accepting nominations for the title of Great Brooksvillian.
Applicants will be recognized as outstanding men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, culture and/or economy of the community. After making their selections, City Council members will honor these men and women at a ceremony Oct. 17.
A perpetual plaque will be maintained in City Hall to commemorate and memorialize each year's honoree, and an individual plaque will be presented to the families of those honored.

Advisers for recreation, pension fund are needed
BROOKSVILLE - The city is accepting applications from those who want to serve on an advisory board or commission.
One vacancy on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is for a four-year term, through Aug. 31, 2009; two vacancies on the Police Officers' Pension Trust Fund Board of Trustees are for two-year terms, through Aug. 31, 2007.
Applicants must be Brooksville residents and registered voters in Florida and must complete an application to be returned before Friday. Applications can be obtained from the city clerk's office at 201 Howell Ave. For information, call 544-5407.
That unwanted cell phone can help Arc Nature Coast
Arc Nature Coast will team up with local Publix supermarkets for a Phoneraiser, to collect used, working cell phones to raise money. Phoneraiser is a cell phone recycling fundraising corporation for schools, churches and other nonprofit organizations. Animal sanctuary giving away six shepherd mixes
Because of the large number of dogs on hand and lack of facilities and volunteers to properly house and care for them, Greenmans Glen Animal Sanctuary will place six shepherd mix puppies, about 6 months old, with any dog-loving, responsible adult free of charge.
All have been spayed or neutered and have some shots. Pups need to have lots of social contact with people, are very friendly and will require training. For information and directions, call 597-8711.
