John's Pass festival to raise cash

MADEIRA BEACH - The Kiwanis Club of Gulf Beaches will host a special fundraiser Saturday to benefit the Alex's Lemonade Fund and Pediatric Cancer Research Center. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bell Tower in John's Pass Village and will feature lemonade sold from a replica of Alexandra "Alex" Scott's original lemonade stand.
Hot dogs and other foods will be available for purchase. Activities will include face painting, balloon art, arts and crafts, a coloring book contest, prize raffle and musical entertainment.
Ronald McDonald will visit between 10 and 11 a.m. Devil Rays mascot Raymond will visit between 2 and 3 p.m.
The event will be part of a nationwide fundraising effort to fight the childhood cancer neuroblastoma and other childhood cancers that affect thousands of children each year. The fundraiser will honor Alexandra "Alex" Scott, who started "Alex's Lemonade Stand."

Belleair Beach

The North Beaches Branch YMCA Kiddie Sports summer program for children ages 3 and 4 at the Belleair Beach City Hall park will continue through Monday. The cost is $20 for each child for the four-week course, which includes group games and an introduction to a variety of sports. Emphasis is placed on noncompetitive learning and skill development. Gulfport
Each Wednesday the Gulfport Casino offers swing lessons and dancing from 8 p.m. to midnight. The Casino is located at 5500 Shore Blvd. Cost is $6. For more information, call 274-4950.

Indian Rocks Beach
The North Beaches YMCA and Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue will present a course on infant CPR Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, 1615 First St. Lunch and snacks will not be provided for participant or child, but free babysitting will be offered at the YMCA Kiddie Club. The cost is $30 for the one-day course. Checks should be made out to Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue. Class size is limited. For more information, call 595-5610.

The North Beaches Branch YMCA, 500 Second St., is a drop-off site for donations for the community food pantry at Calvary Episcopal Church. Nonperishable food items can be dropped off at the YMCA branch Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as at all of its special events. The pantry also accepts donations of paper goods, toiletries, bottled water and even pet food. No fresh food can be accepted. A special program of Spanish language immersion for children ages 1 to 4 is being offered at Calvary Episcopal Church, 1615 First St. The one-hour weekly Parent and Tot classes focus on a weekly age-appropriate theme reinforcing the basic building blocks of colors, numbers, shapes and a working theme vocabulary in Spanish. The teacher will sing and speak to the children only in Spanish. Parent Sing- and Speak-along sheets will be provided, so the parent attending can participate. Classes include playtime, singing, a craft and a snack. Classes will be held every Monday and Friday at 3:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per class or $12 for drop-ins. To register, call Amy at 479-8929.

The North Beaches Branch YMCA is offering a morning Pilates class at Indian Shores Town Hall every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A total fitness class is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Belleair Beach. Beginning yoga also is offered in Belleair Beach, and for the more advanced student of yoga, there are classes at Indian Shores Town Hall. Call the YMCA at 595-5610 for a complete indoor exercise schedule.
Redington Shores
The town of Redington Shores will celebrate its 50th anniversary this month with a number of events:
Aug. 27, Celebration Luau, 6 to 11 p.m. at the Pinellas County Beach Access, 182nd Ave. West and Gulf Blvd. The event includes dinner and entertainment. Cost is $35 per person. Table sponsorships cost $500.
Aug. 30, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Open House 50th Anniversary Commemoration and Wine & Cheese Reception in the Redington Shores Town Hall Community Room, 17425 Gulf Blvd. The event is free.
The town will also hold a 50th anniversary parade Oct. 8, starting from Town Hall and ending at Constitution Park for the Annual Town Picnic. The 50th anniversary logo items, including T-shirts, ball hats and visors, are on sale at Town Hall for $10. For more information, call 397-5538.
St. Pete Beach
The Tampa Bay Beach Boppers will host Beach Boogie 2005 Aug. 18 to 21, at the Sirata Beach Resort, 5300 Gulf Blvd. The event will include dance workshops, Friday sunset party, hospitalities Friday and Saturday, dancing on Sunday and a smoke-free ballroom. Sand Key
The Pinellas County Parks and Recreation Department will host a Sea Turtle Interpretive Program Aug. 12 and 26 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Sand Key Park, 1060 Gulf Blvd. Participants will learn about sea turtles and their nesting habits. The classes will include a guided beach hike, information on steps to be followed when a turtle nest is discovered and why lights on the beach may be hazardous to baby sea turtles. The program also includes a walk to the shore to see bird nesting areas and sea turtle nests. A question-and-answer session will follow. For more information, call 464-3347.
