ST. PETERSBURG - A fire broke out in Saigon Market shortly after the owners left Tuesday evening, causing damage that could keep the popular store closed for a while, officials said.
"All my life is in there," owner Bichthuan "Bea" Do, 45, said as she watched firefighters climb off the roof of the building, 553 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. N.
The fire began shortly after Do and her husband, Long Pham, locked up about 7 p.m. Firefighters, who got the call at 7:36 p.m., had to break through the door to get to the flames and cut a hole in the roof for ventilation, said Lt. Rick Feinberg of St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.
The extent of the damage was unknown Tuesday night but one onlooker said it could have been worse.
"It looked like it was going to go up but they got it in time," said Kevin Roth, who smelled the smoke from his home a few blocks away.
