Stanford's Matt Haryasz and Chris Hernandez were selected Wednesday for the U.S. men's basketball team that will compete in the World University Games.
Hernandez is one of four players on the roster who have played for other USA Basketball teams. Greg Brunner of Iowa, Shelden Williams of Duke and Craig Smith of Boston College have all represented the United States before.
The others selected were: Randy Foye of Villanova, Mike Gansey of West Virginia, Vincent Grier of Minnesota, Eric Hicks of Cincinnati, Bobby Jones of Washington, Gerry McNamara of Syracuse and Patrick Sparks of Kentucky.
The team will be coached by Jay Wright of Villanova with Jeff Capel of Virginia Commonwealth and Bobby Gonzalez of Manhattan as assistants.
The World University Games will be held in Izmir, Turkey from Aug. 12-22.
USF tabbed for 10th
USF's volleyball team has been picked by Big East coaches to finish 10th in its first season in the conference, with sophomore Kristina Fabris one of 13 players on the preseason all-conference team.
The Bulls, who went 9-20 and finished in a five-way tie for eighth out of 14 teams in Conference USA last season, return every member from last year's squad, including Fabris, last year's C-USA Freshman of the Year. Louisville was the coaches' choice as preseason champ, garnering 12 of 15 first-place votes, with Notre Dame getting the other three.
The Bulls open their season Sept. 2 at Michigan State and make their Big East debut at Marquette on Sept. 23.
AFFILIATION: Flagler College in St. Augustine is considering moving from NAIA to NCAA Division II. The school is a charter member of the Florida Sun Conference.
SOCCER: USF goalkeeper Colby West, who did not play for the Bulls as a freshman last season, has transferred to the University of Tampa.
West, the younger brother of Hunter West, who has led the Bulls in scoring the past two seasons, will have four years of eligibility at UT and will challenge three returning keepers for the Spartans' starting job.
