TAMPA - After discussing it for less than an hour, a jury Thursday afternoon recommended that William Deparvine be sentenced to death for killing a Tierra Verde couple in 2003.

The jury, consisting of nine women and three men, voted 8-4 for the death penalty for the murders of Richard and Karla Van Dusen.

Deparvine, 53, was convicted on Wednesday of shooting the couple in the back of the head at point-blank range and dumping their bodies in a dirt driveway near Old Memorial Highway in northwest Hillsborough.

Judge J. Rogers Padgett will hold a hearing on Sept. 12, during which he will weigh the jury's recommendation with mitigating evidence from defense attorneys before sentencing Deparvine.
