Country singer Toby Keith made headlines in 2002 when he recorded Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American), a raging response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The song struck a chord with extra-patriotic listeners, while others condemned it as jingoism.
Meanwhile, the song, which includes lyrics such as, 'Cause we'll put a boot in your a--. It's the American Way climbed to No. 1 on the country charts.
Keith, 44, had his first No. 1 hit on the Billboard music charts with his song Should've Been a Cowboy from his 1993 self-titled debut album.
A year later, he released his second album, Boomtown, which spawned hits, You Ain't Much Fun and Who's That Man.
He has won awards for Best Male Vocalist from the Academy of Country Music and the CMT awards.
His newest album, Honkytonk University, was released in May.
Keith performs with Lee Ann Womack and Shooter Jennings at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ford Amphitheatre, Tampa. Tickets cost $32.50-$68.75. Call 287-8844.
