Service for soldier today

SPRING HILL - A community memorial service for Army Staff Sgt. Michael W. Schafer of Spring Hill will take place at 7:30 p.m. today at Booster Stadium at Springstead High School, 3300 Mariner Blvd.
Schafer, a 1998 graduate of Springstead High, was killed in action July 25 in Oruzgan, Afghanistan. He was the first person from Hernando County to die during the current combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. The service, which is open to the public, will include speakers from Springstead and Schafer's family, proclamations, a message from County Administrator Gary Adams and a candlelighting ceremony. CORRECTION
Army Staff Sgt. Michael W. Schafer was the 94th soldier from Florida to be killed in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The number was incorrect in a story Thursday.
