NEW TAMPA - After moving to Hunter's Green two years ago, Leonard Contardo fell in love with New Tampa. He liked the area so much, he almost immediately became involved with the New Tampa Community Council and was named president last September.
Now Contardo is moving on. He will move to Atlanta by the end of this month to take an executive-level position with the nonprofit Georgia Tech Alumni Association.
"Only a special opportunity like this would make me want to leave," the 37-year-old said. "I leave with only the most positive feelings about my experience in New Tampa. It's truly a special place to live and raise a family."
Contardo, who is leaving a job with Phoenix Career Services, has already sold his home and bought a house in Atlanta with his wife, Renee, and two children. Before moving to Tampa, the family lived in Atlanta for eight years while Contardo worked for Georgia Tech University.
The New Tampa Community Council, which is a nonprofit organization devoted to business interests in New Tampa, will hold elections in September and will likely nominate a new president shortly after. Former president Frank Margarella serves as vice president.
Since moving to the area, Contardo has been involved in several neighborhood events, such as Taste of New Tampa and outreach meetings with Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio. He was also an active member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.
"I look forward to staying in touch with people here," Contardo said. "And I plan on coming back for next year's Taste of New Tampa."
