  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Zoning

HARTline wants land zoned for new center

The following petitions have been submitted for review:

TOWN 'N COUNTRY: Hillsborough's Transit Authority hopes to get the wheels spinning on a new project at Waters Avenue and Sheldon Road.

HARTline wants to rezone 9 acres of agricultural land into a planned development for a single-story transit center building.

The center would have canopies to shelter customer service staffers and riders, public and private restrooms, a vending area, space for four to six buses and vans to load at once, and a park-and-ride lot with up to 100 spaces.

Access to the center would come from Sheldon and Waters. To help ease traffic, HARTline would install a traffic light on Waters Avenue and extend surrounding sidewalks and crosswalks.

HARTline says since the area is mostly residential and commercial, the bus station would mesh nicely.

A zoning hearing master will hear the request on Oct. 17, followed by Hillsborough County commissioners on Dec. 13. (Petition 05-1774)

CITRUS PARK: The county hopes Gunn Highway's water can run off into a new pond.

Hillsborough County wants a special use permit to dig a retention pond at the southeast corner of Gunn Highway and S Mobley Road. The pond comes hand in hand with the widening of Gunn Highway, which the county plans to expand to four lanes a half-mile north of Sickles High School.

The dug-up land would be moved to the corner of Gunn Highway and Sheldon Road, where it would be used for future development.

A land use hearing officer will hear the request on Aug. 26. (Petition 05-1652)

WESTCHASE: A growing community needs room for signage along Race Track Road.

Main Street at Hampton Lakes is a 40-acre multiuse community on Race Track Road with townhomes and apartments, shopping including a grocery store, and medical offices. Developer Amprop wants to reduce the setback requirement to put up a sign, since 29 feet of Race Track Road was dedicated for road-widening.

A land use hearing officer will hear the request on Aug. 26. (Petition 05-1708)

CARROLLWOOD: A storage facility may join other stores on Gunn Highway.

Mark Scott Scime wants to modify a rezoning from 1981, which allowed a 96,000-square-foot commercial center at 6335 Gunn Highway. The center is home to an Oil Can Henry, Big Lots and Discount Auto Parts.

Scime proposes adding a 6,000-square-foot commercial storage building with access to Hampton Park Boulevard.

A zoning hearing master will hear the request on Oct. 17, followed by commissioners on Dec. 13. (Petition 05-1757)

When and where: Hearings of county zoning hearing masters and land use hearing officers, and land use meetings of the County Commission, are held on the second floor of the County Center, 601 E Kennedy Blvd. Zoning hearings begin at 6 p.m., and commission meetings begin at 9 a.m. Both are televised on government access channels. Land use hearing officer hearings, which are not televised, begin at 9 a.m. For information, call (813) 272-5920.
