Utility infraction rates removed from PSC report

By LOUIS HAU
Published August 8, 2005

The Florida Public Service Commission this year decided to stop publishing its monthly "Consumer Activity Report," which kept track of utility customer complaints. Citing pending budget cuts and minimal usage of the report among PSC staff members, the commission said at the time it was merging portions of the report with another one.

The result is a slimmed-down publication that is still called the Consumer Activity Report but doesn't include much of the information that made the old version popular.

While the new monthly report includes basic complaint logs for electric, gas and phone companies, it no longer calculates data on how many apparent infractions each utility company had recorded per 1,000 customers, making it more difficult to compare customer-service levels among utilities of varying sizes.

The new report also eliminates data that tracked the PSC's performance in handling customer complaints. For instance, the old report ran a running tally of complaints resolved by the commission.

The PSC says that previously released information no longer in the new report is available upon request. An archive of consumer activity reports can be found at www.psc.state.fl.us/general/publications/reports.cfm
