Volusia man's DNA linked to 1988 murder

DAYTONA BEACH - A man was arrested after DNA that linked him to a rape also connected him to the murder of a San Diego woman in 1988, authorities said.

Mark Francis Elder, 47, of Orange City, was charged with murder and sexual battery. He was being held Saturday without bail at the Volusia County jail.

Elder picked up a prostitute in November 2004 along a main beachside road in Daytona Beach, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office. Deputies said instead of taking her to a hotel, he took her to the deserted dirt road and raped her.

The woman reported the attack. An investigation showed that several other prostitutes had also been assaulted by a man in a blue van matching the same description.

In April, the Sheriff's Office found that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement matched DNA in the sexual assault to the 1988 murder of Janet Moore in San Diego. The 27-year-old was stabbed in her studio apartment.

Elder was pulled over in his blue van on July 9 for an expired tag and officials confiscated a marijuana cigarette with his saliva on it. The DNA matched and he was arrested Friday.
