FORT WALTON BEACH - A soldier from Florida and another from Kentucky died in Iraq last week when a civilian truck crashed into their Army vehicle, the Department of Defense said Monday.

Sgt. 1st Class Brett Eugene Walden, 40, a native of Fort Walton Beach, was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Campbell, Ky.

Walden and Sgt. 1st Class Robert V. Derenda, 42, of Ledbetter, Ky., were killed in the crash on Friday in Rubiah. Two other soldiers were injured.

They were on a convoy mission when the civilian fuel truck collided with their Humvee, the defense department said.

Walden enlisted in the Army in 1987. He had been a weapons sergeant with the 5th Special Forces since May 2001.

He recently started his fourth tour in Iraq and had served a tour in Afghanistan. He received numerous awards in his career, including the Bronze Star.

Walden is survived by his wife, Autumn, and 12-year-old daughter Alexandria, of Dover, Pa.
