TAMPA - Hillsborough sheriff's investigators arrested two men Monday in sexual battery cases involving children.

Deputies picked up Gary Payne, 56, at his home at 5614 Glencrest Blvd. in Northdale on Monday, jail records show. He was charged with two counts of sexual battery, one count of lewd and lascivious molestation and one count of lewd and lascivious conduct - all felonies. Sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway said the alleged abuse of the female victim, then 12, dates to 2004.

Payne is the president, director and treasurer of G.&A. Vendall Inc., a vending machine business that has been operating in Tampa Bay for nearly 20 years, according to state corporate records.

Deputies on Monday also arrested Johnnie Rodel Roberson, 51, of 414 E Clay Ave. in Brandon, on one count of sexual battery on a victim under 12.

Callaway said Roberson, listed in jail records as a truss builder, allegedly abused an 11-year-old girl this week.

Both men were held without bail in the Orient Road jail.
