Police monitor traffic as school begins

CRYSTAL RIVER - As promised, city police were out in force Wednesday, the first day of school, to enforce traffic laws.

And officers did plenty of enforcing, issuing 41 citations, according to a police news release. Police conducted high-profile enforcement around the city's school zones. Between 7 and 9:30 a.m., officers issued 21 citations. The highest speed recorded was 48 mph in a 20 mph zone on State Road 44. Between 2:15 and 4 p.m., officers issued 20 citations at various school zones. The highest speed was 42 mph in a 20 mph zone on SR 44. Officers will continue monitoring the area throughout the school year, the release said.
