Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Top of the class

School's in, and Top of the Class is back, too

A day or two ago, kids were taking that final bus trip home for the endless summer. Oh, wait, that was two months ago. And on Wednesday they returned to another seemingly endless new school year.

Well, I'm back for my 11th year at Top of the Class. I'm guessing most children, the little ones, at least, are delighted to be back in their classrooms; teachers are glad to be back doing what they do best; and parents are perhaps, well, let's just say "Happy Mother's Day!"

Top of the Class is a weekly page about stuff that is going on at school. It is always good news. It features the Say It column, where I ask children from prekindergarten to high school questions and get their often insightful or amusing answers.

I cover new programs, events and triumphs that occur at public and private schools. On this page you can find Class Notes, a list of fundraisers, meeting dates, course offerings, opportunities or whatever information the schools may want to get out. Check Class Notes for spaghetti dinners, fall festivals and school advisory enhancement council meeting times.

Often Top of the Class will run Newsmakers: lists of students or teachers who have received honors. This can include students of the month, award-winning teachers or students or even schools that received special recognitions.

From time to time I feature a former Citrus County high school student and report what he or she is up to. That section is called Where Are They Now?

If I come across any really good Web sites that might benefit students, teachers or parents, I'll list them under Hot Links.

Elsewhere in the Citrus Times, I highlight students, teachers, schools and programs in the Spotlight stories, which usually run on Thursdays. Events and information about children that may not be related to school can be found in Youth Roundup. It also runs on Thursdays most weeks.

I am always happy to hear from any school, teacher, student, parent or school organization with information that might be appropriate for Top of the Class. Of course, space is limited and I won't be able to publish everything, but I will run as much information as I can.

Reach me at eduritchie@yahoo.com 860-7320 fax or 726-2743. Have a wonderful year and I look forward to working with many of you.
