Teacher earns place in 'Who's Who'

A student named Crystal River High's media specialist as someone who had a positive impact on that student's life.

Lynn Mitchell has been the media specialist at Crystal River High School for four years. She did the same job at the Withlacoochee Technical Institute and Citrus Spring Elementary School for 10 years before that.

Sometime during those 14 years she made a special impact on a student. One of her students - she doesn't know which one - was listed in Who's Who Among American College Students. People listed in that publication are asked a variety of questions, including which teacher had a positive effect on their lives.

That information is compiled and used to produce another publication: Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Because the student mentioned her, Mitchell has secured a place of her own in the book.

About half of 1 percent of college students are recommended for the honor of being listed in Who's Who. Mitchell was flattered to know that a student who had many teachers throughout his or her life had chosen to list her as an influential teacher.

"It makes you feel not only good, but it makes you feel like you're doing what you should be doing when a student honors you like this," she said.

Mitchell is a former licensed practical nurse who received her bachelor's degree in education from Ohio University. Later she earned a master's degree from Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va. When she moved to Florida in 1991 she attended the University of South Florida and added Florida certification in education leadership.

Mitchell's husband, Al, is the General Educational Development preparation teacher at the Withlacoochee Technical Institute. They have two sons: Marc "Cuda," who serves in the Navy in Maryland; and Matthew, a Sarasota teacher.
