Swanson to run for county office

The commission seat includes part of South and West Tampa, as well as the county shoreline.

TAMPA - The race to replace Democrat Kathy Castor on the Hillsborough County Commission is filling up with more than a year to go before the election.

Brad Swanson, a Republican and former vice president and spokesman for the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, announced his candidacy for the District 1 seat that takes in South Tampa, much of West Tampa and the entire county shoreline.

"I'm running to make the county a better place," Swanson said. "I've got two young children, and I believe I can make a difference on the County Commission."

Swanson, 34, is vice president for business development at ROI Consulting Inc., which advises companies on how to improve their productivity. He left the Chamber about three weeks ago, and previously worked as director of public affairs for the Spring of Tampa Bay, the domestic abuse shelter.

He joins Republicans Rose Ferlita, a Tampa City Council member, along with Gary Santti, and Democrat Deborah Cope, who have announced their intention to run for the seat. Democratic state Rep. Bob Henriquez is expected to get into the race as well.

In a news release, Swanson said he will support conservative principles, such as smaller government, lower taxes and greater individual responsibility, and an agenda that is pro-family and pro-business.
