  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Hot Ticket: At last, let the festival begin

By LENNIE BENNETT
Published August 11, 2005

About this time last year I wrote, "Rain and heat may force some plans to change, but the Clearwater Fine Arts Festival will be impervious to weather."

Well . . . not.

Hurricane Charley threatened to blow through last August so the art show was canceled, reminding me of the chestnut about only fools and tourists . . . you know the rest.

Anyway, the show goes on this year, and what was to be the second annual Clearwater Fine Arts Festival (but is actually the first) is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Harborview Center. Which means that the 75 artists will be ensconced in air-conditioned comfort, as will shoppers seeking fine arts and craft, including paintings, prints, ceramics, jewelry, glass sculpture and decorative objects. Shown here is one example of what will be on display: a painting by Danny O'Driscoll, of Leesburg, S.C.

The Clearwater Fine Arts Festival is Saturday and Sunday at the Harborview Center, 300 Cleveland St., Clearwater. Hours both days are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free. For information, call (727) 556-0550.
