Girl, 15, injured by flying tire as axle explodes

By Times Staff Writer
Published August 12, 2005

SUN CITY CENTER - A car's back axle apparently exploded on the side of Interstate 75 Thursday, and a flying tire struck a 15-year-old girl, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

A sheriff's spokesman said the family of five had noticed their car "wobbling" on the highway around 1:45 p.m. and pulled over to the shoulder to inspect the car.

Ray Yeakley, a spokesman for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, which responded to the scene, said the car was smoking, but not on fire, when the rear axle apparently exploded. Yeakley said a language barrier between rescue personnel and the family, who were Hispanic, limited the information available to authorities. The names of the girl and her family were not released. The girl was struck in the upper body and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, Yeakley said. No information on her condition was available.
