Woman, 77, killed, man hurt in fire

TAMPA - A 77-year-old woman was killed and her husband was seriously injured Thursday after their house caught on fire and overwhelmed them with smoke.

Burglar bars on the windows of the home at 2909 E 17th Ave. blocked neighbors from entering to rescue the two, said Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade.

Firefighters arrived within five minutes of getting the call at 6:38 p.m., but by the time they broke into the house to pull the pair out, Nellie Junious had died, Wade said.

Her husband, 77-year-old Dosie Junious, was taken to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition, Wade said. Hospital officials could not confirm that information.

Fire officials were investigating the cause of the fire, which mostly filled the house with thick smoke but few flames, Wade said. He said he did not know in which room the fire started.
