School is back in session, and Pinellas County's 16 prep teams had tryouts last week.
The Pinellas County High School Bowling League will start its 33rd year Thursday at Seminole Lanes. "We look forward to an exciting season," league secretary Janet Waddell said.
"We had two 300s last year and one the year before that," she said. "These kids are really good."
Boys and girls varsity and coed junior varsity squads will bowl in the 14-week fall competition on Thursdays after school. The varsity scores games on a scratch and handicap basis, and the JV uses the handicap system so all bowlers may compete.
Here are the practice sites for each school: Dunedin at Dunedin Lanes; Countryside, Palm Harbor University and Tarpon Springs at Countryside Lanes; East Lake and Clearwater at AMF Clearwater; Largo and Osceola at Twedt's Lanes; Seminole at Seminole Lanes; Pinellas Park and Dixie Hollins at Liberty Lanes; St. Petersburg, Gibbs and Northeast at Sunrise Lanes; and Boca Ciega and Lakewood at Ten Pin Lanes.
NABI: The membership fee for National Amateur Bowlers Inc is $25. The cost for a single-day event is $40, and it is $50 for multi-day competition.
Club 570 will have a tournament at 11 a.m. on Aug. 28 at Seminole Lanes. The jackpot is at $295, with a strike pot of $176.
Tampa's Rod McClain captured first place with a 188 average and received $385 in a Club 577 tournament at AMF Clearwater last week.
Lori Lloyd of St. Petersburg finished second with a 168 average.
DID YOU KNOW? The Dutch 200 refers to a game in which strikes and spares are alternated.
The term is believed to be a take-off of "Dutch treat," in which two people share the cost of a date. Strikes and spares share the game in alternate frames in a Dutch-treat 200 manner, which was reduced to Dutch 200. UPCOMING EVENTS: Southland Lanes is looking for bikers who bowl.
The Pinellas Park center is taking registration for the new Motorcycle Club Bowling League, a four-person mixed competition with any combo on a team.
Starting Sept. 17, the league will roll every Saturday at 7 p.m. Southland's next senior match-play tournament is scheduled for Aug. 20-21 and Aug. 27-28, with finals on Sept. 3-4.
