Aerial survey of manatees conducted

By Times Staff Writer
Published August 13, 2005

A federal wildlife officer spotted 63 manatees in area waters during an aerial survey on Wednesday.

There were 37 in Kings Bay, 12 in the Crystal River, 11 in the Salt River, one in the Halls River and two in the lower Homosassa River. None were seen in other areas, including the Progress Energy discharge canal, the Cross Florida Barge Canal and the Homosassa Blue Waters.

Aerial surveys are conducted throughout the year to keep track of the manatee population in the area. In winter months, when the gulf water temperature drops, many more manatees flock to area springs to keep warm.
