Weekly newspaper now open

By ANNE LINDBERG
Published August 14, 2005

PINELLAS PARK - There's a new kid in town - in the form of a free weekly newspaper devoted to this city.

It's the Pinellas Park Beacon, the latest production of Tampa Bay Newspapers, which also publishes the Seminole Beacon, the Largo Leader and other local papers. Tampa Bay Newspapers is under common ownership with the St. Petersburg Times.

The Pinellas Park Beacon has been in the works for two years, said Dan Autrey, the paper's publisher. City leaders approached him about the need for a paper devoted to Pinellas Park happenings.

Autrey said he thought Pinellas Park would be a perfect setting for a community newspaper because it had a small-town feel, good leadership and a sense of community. Those elements are necessary for a community newspaper to be successful, Autrey said.

"It was just a good fit for us," he said. "They wanted it."

The first edition came out Aug. 5 and was well-received.

"I've never felt as welcomed anywhere before," Autrey said.

Even though Tampa Bay Newspapers is commonly owned with the St. Petersburg Times, they operate independently and determine their own editorial content.
