Pinellas County sheriff's deputies this week will be targeting motorists who fail to stop for school buses loading or unloading children.

While enforcement continues throughout the school year, this week's efforts are meant to educate drivers on the need to be observant near bus stops. Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Bordner said deputies from the traffic enforcement and community policing units are targeting 30 school bus stops countywide this week.
"This is more of a proactive endeavor before we have a tragedy," Bordner said.
Last year, 16-year-old Clearwater High School student Rebecca McKinney and 8-year-old James B. Sanderlin Elementary School pupil Brooke Ingoldsby were struck and killed by drivers after they got off their school buses.
Traffic traveling in the same direction as a school bus must come to a stop when the bus stops. Traffic in the opposite direction must also come to a stop, unless a 5-foot median or barrier is present.
Fines range from $154.50 to $254.50, depending on what side of the bus a driver passes.
