Man accused of beating girlfriend's son

TAMPA - Detectives on Monday night arrested a man they say beat his girlfriend's 20-month-old son so badly that the child remains in a hospital two weeks later.

Torrence D. Lloyd, 20, of 8228 S 78th St. near Palm River is being held without bail in the Orient Road Jail on one count of aggravated child abuse, a first-degree felony.

Hillsborough sheriff's detectives say Lloyd abused the child at his home on Aug. 2, after the mother dropped off the baby and went to work. It was the first time she left the child alone with Lloyd, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

She picked up the child that evening and noticed the next morning that he could not stand or walk and had injuries on his face, neck and abdomen, Carter said.

She took her son to St. Joseph's Hospital, where doctors found a hairline skull fracture, a sheriff's report said.

Detectives interviewed the mother and determined the child was injured while in Lloyd's care, Carter said.

Monday at 5 p.m., they arrested Lloyd at a residence on Boyette and Balm-Riverview roads in southern Hillsborough, according to jail records.

The child remains at St. Joseph's hospital.

Carter said he is expected to recover.

Lloyd, listed in jail records as a plasterer, has no record of previous arrests in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
