Share school spirit at potluck

REDINGTON BEACH - The Redington Beach Property Owners Association is hosting a potluck dinner Aug. 25 at 6 p.m., to celebrate back to school. Bring the family and a dish. Soft drinks and utensils are provided. Nonmembers can join. For more information, call Nick Simons at 421-0885.

The fifth annual Gulfport Gecko Fest will be held Sept. 3, noon to 10 p.m., on Beach Boulevard. Entertainment will be provided by Wendy and the Soulshakers, Dave on Drums, the Fallopian Tubes and many others. Gulfport's first street dance will be from 8 to 10 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Gulfport Merchants Association. Indian Rocks Beach
The North Beaches Branch YMCA is holding a special meeting for seniors today at 1 p.m. to discover the type of programs and activities senior adults would like to see offered in the future. The meeting will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church, 1615 First S. For more information, call 595.5610.

A Community Cleanup will be held next week. Residents should place materials to be picked up at the curb no later than 7 a.m on Aug. 24. Items will be picked up by Aug. 26. Items such as white goods, appliances, furniture, etc. will be picked up free of charge; however, city crews will not pick up cars, boats, trailers, construction materials, stumps, tree removal material or hazardous waste items.

The North Beaches Branch YMCA, 500 Second St., is a dropoff site for donations for the community food pantry at Calvary Episcopal Church. Nonperishable food items can be dropped off at the YMCA branch Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as at all of its special events. The pantry also accepts donations of paper goods, toiletries, bottled water and even pet food. No fresh food of any kind can be accepted. A special program of Spanish language immersion for children ages 1 to 4 is being offered at Calvary Episcopal Church, 1615 First St. The one-hour weekly Parent and Tot classes focus on a weekly age-appropriate theme reinforcing the basic building blocks of colors, numbers, shapes and a working theme vocabulary in Spanish. The teacher will sing and speak to the children only in Spanish. Parent Sing- and Speak-along sheets will be provided, so the parent attending can participate. Classes include playtime, singing, a craft and a snack. Classes will be held every Monday and Friday at 3:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per class or $12 for drop-ins. To register, call Amy at 479-8929.

The North Beaches Branch YMCA is offering a morning Pilates class at Indian Shores Town Hall every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A total fitness class is held on Tuesday and Thursday in Belleair Beach. Beginning yoga also is offered in Belleair Beach, and for the more advanced students of yoga, there are classes at Indian Shores Town Hall. Call the YMCA at 595-5610 for a complete indoor exercise schedule.
Madeira Beach
The Recreation Center will hold special classes for children ages 5 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12 who want to learn soccer basics and play games and a tournament. Registration will be held at the Recreation Center, 200 Rex Place, today from 6 to 8 p.m and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
Redington Shores
The town of Redington Shores will celebrate its 50th anniversary this month with a number of events:
Saturday, Aug. 27, Celebration Luau, 6 to 11 p.m. at the Pinellas County Beach Access, 182nd Ave. W and Gulf Boulevard. The event includes dinner and entertainment. Cost is $35 per person. Table sponsorships cost $500.
Tuesday, Aug. 30, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Open House 50th Anniversary Commemoration and Wine & Cheese Reception in the Redington Shores Town Hall Community Room, 17425 Gulf Blvd. The event is free.
The town will also hold a 50th anniversary parade Saturday, Oct. 8, starting at Town Hall and ending at Constitution Park for the Annual Town Picnic. 50th anniversary logo items, including T-shirts, ball hats and visors, are on sale at Town Hall for $10. For more information, call 397-5538
St. Pete Beach
The Tampa Bay Beach Boppers will host Beach Boogie 2005 Thursday through Sunday at the Sirata Beach Resort, 5300 Gulf Blvd. The event will include dance workshops, Friday sunset party, hospitalities Friday and Saturday, dancing Sunday and a smoke-free ballroom. Sand Key
The Pinellas County Parks and Recreation Department will host a Sea Turtle Interpretive Program on Friday, Aug. 26, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Sand Key Park, 1060 Gulf Blvd. Participants will learn about sea turtles and their nesting habits. The classes will include a guided beach hike, steps to be followed when a turtle nest is discovered and why lights on the beach may be hazardous to baby sea turtles. The program also includes a walk to the shore to see bird nesting areas and sea turtle nests. A question-and-answer session will follow each presentation. For more information, call 464-3347.
South Pasadena
A free seminar, "Eight Little-Known Money Traps That Routinely Cost Many Retirees Thousands," will be held Aug. 30, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at The Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay, 1255 Pasadena Ave. S.
