SCHOOLS SEEK VOLUNTEERS: Community members are encouraged to become involved in the educational process and are asked to consider volunteering an hour or more a week in district schools. Opportunities to volunteer can be found in the public schools by calling 726-1931, ext. 2206, or at Pope John Paul II Catholic School by calling Shelby at 527-5424 or Rita at 746-2020. If you are interested in helping young people and don't know where to begin, call Shelby Weingarten, coordinator of the Citrus County Mentoring Partnership, at 527-5424.

CITRUS ORGANIZATION FOR THE GIFTED: The Citrus Organization for the Gifted will meet at 6 p.m. today in the Inverness Primary School Cafeteria. COG is an organization of parents of gifted children. The meeting is open to parents and all interested community members. Supervision will be provided for school-aged children.

WEEKEND COLLEGE: The Central Florida Community College Lecanto campus will offer Weekend College beginning Aug. 27. The five courses offered in the pilot program are accelerated financial accounting, college algebra, general psychology, microcomputer applications, and college and career success.

The last day to register for Weekend College is Friday. For a schedule of courses or for information, call the Citrus County campus at 746-6721.

NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH AND BREAKFAST PROGRAMS: Students in public schools and participating private schools eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch must apply each year to receive benefits. Household size and income criteria determine eligibility. Foster children may receive benefits based on the child's income alone. Applications were mailed to all public school families. Applications must be returned to Food Services at 1007 W Main St., Inverness. Those on file for the 2004-2005 school year will expire Sept. 22. Call Food Services at 726-1931, ext 2429. Students attending private schools can call the schools for application information.

CRYSTAL RIVER MIDDLE SAEC MEETING: Crystal River Middle School will hold its first School Advisory Enhancement Council meeting for the school year from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 8 in the upstairs administrative conference room. Officers will be elected. This year's meeting dates will be Oct. 13, Nov. 10, Dec. 8, Jan. 12, Feb. 9, March 9, April 13 and May 11. The meetings are open to the public.

CREST SAEC MEETING: The CREST School Advisory Enhancement Council will meet at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the school cafeteria.

LEARNING CENTER: The Community Learning Center of Citrus County is available for one-on-one and small group tutoring, FCAT practice and homework assistance. Students must register to attend, and space is limited. Call 560-0000.
