Inside information

A relaxing spot to park it

By THERESA WILLINGHAM
Published August 18, 2005

Go to Pinellas County's Wall Springs Park for the restorative beauty of the springs, for great views of the gulf, for the fishing and kayaking, for the biking, hiking, picnicking and playing. Go because you really ought to see it.

The amenities - wide concrete pathways, sturdy boardwalks, several fishing piers, a 35-foot viewing tower, full-scale picnic areas and an enormous playground - opened in June. The area's history as a recreation spot, however, goes back to the turn of the 20th century, when people flocked to the springs as a spa and swimming spot.

Today, swimming isn't permitted, but the beautiful springs pump crystal-clear water from the Floridan Aquifer, as much as 10.7-million gallons a day during the rainy season.

Wall Springs Park is adjacent to the Pinellas Trail at 3725 De Soto Blvd., Palm Harbor, with access from Alt. U.S. 19. 727 943-4653; www.pinellascounty.org/park
