University renames dorm to honor alumni family

DOWNTOWN - The University of Tampa honored one of its alumni families during a ceremony Sunday to rename Crescent Place residence hall the Alfred and Beverly Austin Hall.
The dormitory, completed in 1998, is a nine-story, 448-bed facility on W Kennedy Boulevard near Brevard Avenue.
Al Austin, a former UT board chairman and current chairman emeritus, is a Tampa developer and businessman active in many charities and civic causes.
The Austins were chosen for their work chairing UT's recent $83-million capital campaign as well as for other contributions to the university.
Contributions to the campaign include $1-million from the Don & Erika Wallace Family Foundation, which was announced Monday. Their gift will be recognized on a plaque at the entrance of the Crescent Club on the ninth floor of the Vaughn Center.
You can gaze and buy at tonight's juried art show
TAMPA HEIGHTS - Local artists will exhibit their artwork in a juried show, "Clair de Lune: An Evening of Art Gazing," from 5:30 to 11 p.m. today at the main hall of the Sanctuary apartments, 502 E Ross Ave.
Local artist Edgar Sanchez Cumbas will judge the show, and artwork will be available for purchase. The event marks the last time the Sanctuary will be used as a gallery before being rented out as studio space.

Reception will honor Alpha House volunteer
TAMPA - Alpha House and the Lyssa Morgan Gallery host a reception from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. today at the Lyssa Morgan Gallery, 4062 Henderson Blvd., in honor of Carmen Spoto, a volunteer at Alpha House for more than 13 years.
Spoto became involved with Alpha in 1991, joined the board of directors in 1998 and serves as secretary of the board and as a member of the executive, development and nominating committees. She is owner and president of Spoto Staffing Services Inc. on Henderson Boulevard.

Beginners' classes in digital photo offered
OLD HYDE PARK - The Tampa Gallery of Photographic Arts presents "Digital Photography: the Things You Need to Know" from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Sunrise Cinemas, 1609 W Swann Ave. Eric C. Durham leads the beginners' seminar covering basic digital photography skills, including camera functions, exposure, composition, resolution, and downloading and storage options.

"Jazz Menagerie' will kick-start theater's season

Community studies group selling coupon books
TAMPA - The Florida Institute for Community Studies has received the 2006 Entertainment Books, with coupons for many area restaurants and businesses.
Get discounts at restaurants, including 42nd Street Bistro, Saigon Bay Vietnamese and Red Lobster, as well as on car rentals and hotel rooms.
FICS is selling the books at a discount for $25. Proceeds benefit various FICS programs, including youth development, educational and volunteer programs.

Sunday jazz soirees kick off with Denise Moore
TAMPA HEIGHTS - Jazz lovers unite for an afternoon of good music from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Renaissance Center for the Arts, featuring the music of local band Denise Moore.
The center, 2201 N Florida Ave., was created to promote the local arts. Sunday's performance is the first of three Sunday afternoon jazz soirees.
The Renaissance Jazz Ensemble performs Sept. 18, followed by Rose Bilal on Oct. 23.
