'Virgin' debuts in 1st place

Steve Carell has a hit in his maiden voyage as a leading man, with his comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin taking in $20.6-million to debut at the top of the box office. Wes Craven's airplane thriller Red Eye was second with $16.5-million, studios estimated. The two new movies bumped the previous weekend's top film, Four Brothers, to third with $13-million. Also new: Disney's Valiant, an animated tale about homing pigeons, was No. 7 with $6.1-million, and the motorcycle racing film Supercross: The Movie opened well out of the top 10 with $1.3-million.

McCarthy, Asher divorcing

TV star Jenny McCarthy and her husband, John Asher, have filed for divorce after nearly six years of marriage. The former Playboy playmate and Asher filed for divorce in a Los Angeles court and are citing "irreconcilable differences," Us Weekly reported Friday. McCarthy, 32, married Asher, a 34-year-old film director, in 1999. They met when Asher directed McCarthy in the 1999 film Diamonds. The couple have a 3-year-old son, Evan. McCarthy stars in the new UPN sitcom, The Bad Girl's Guide. Her previous work includes MTV shows Singled Out and The Jenny McCarthy Show.
