TRENTON - A 20-year-old University of North Florida student who apparently went snorkeling by himself at Ginnie Springs was found dead in an underwater cave. The body of Matthew Ross Lund, originally from Jensen Beach, was discovered Saturday by divers in an offshoot known as Dogwood Springs, Gilchrist County sheriff's officials said.
Lund was apparently diving down into the springs while holding his breath, and his parents said he might have hit his head on the entrance to the underwater cave. Foul play was not suspected.
Lund was on the swim team at Martin County High School and could descend 60 feet and resurface without taking a breath, said his father, Gary Lund.
Lund was about to start his junior year at UNF in Jacksonville. He was philosophy major and planned to be an arborist.
Two die in Panhandle when small plane crashes
FREEPORT - Two men were killed in a plane crash shortly after the two-seat aircraft took off from a private airstrip in this Panhandle town, authorities said.
Pilot Fred Bogle, 63, of Seagrove Beach died at the crash site Saturday, while his passenger, Ruben Rios, 40, of Tallahassee died on the way to a hospital, the Walton County Sheriff's Office said. Authorities were not sure whether the plane, a Champion Citabria, encountered mechanical problems.
Sheriff's Lt. Frank Owens said he wasn't sure if the pilot had been able to communicate that the plane was coming down but said the plane wasn't in the airlong.
