WESLEY CHAPEL - A 32-year-old man was killed when the pickup he was riding in on Interstate 75 Monday morning swerved to avoid a semitrailer truck, then overturned and threw him out. Danny R. Spitler of Plant City was pronounced dead at the scene, about a half-mile south of State Road 56. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Spitler was the passenger in a Ford pickup driven by John E. Stanley, 33, also of Plant City. Stanley was northbound in the inside lane about 10 a.m. when a semitrailer tried to move into his lane from the center, he told investigators. Stanley swerved left, leaving the road, then overcorrected to the right and flipped three or four times. Spitler was thrown from the pickup, which came to rest on the shoulder. Stanley was not injured. He said the semitrailer, which did not stop, had a white or red cab and was hauling a flat bed with no cargo. The driver has not been identified. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the patrol at (813) 996-7582.
