Crash after wedding kills 3

Associated Press
Published August 23, 2005

JACKSONVILLE - Three members of a wedding party were killed and four were injured in a traffic accident Monday as they headed toward Jacksonville International Airport for a flight home to New York City.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the seven were in a Ford Explorer headed north on Interstate 95 about 5 a.m.

The driver, Kechia McFadden, 33, missed the airport exit and apparently cut in front of a truck, which struck the sport utility vehicle from behind.

The Explorer swerved off the road, hit a guardrail, overturned and burst into flames.

Killed were Dwight Dula, 36, Brenda Trip-Johnson, 45, and Salesa Griffin, 32. Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper said Dula and Trip-Johnson were ejected, while Griffin was trapped in the SUV.

McFadden was taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening. Taron Williams, 18, Ronald Williams, 12, and Calesa Gray, 6, also received nonlife-threatening injuries.

The truck driver, Wallace Nelson, 41, of Jacksonville, was not hurt.

Leeper said the Explorer was part of a three-vehicle caravan headed to the airport after a weekend wedding in Jacksonville.
