Luau will get things started for town's 50th anniversary

REDINGTON SHORES - A celebration luau on the beach Saturday will kick off special events marking Redington Shores' 50th anniversary.

The luau will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Pinellas County Beach Access, 182nd Ave. W and Gulf Boulevard. The event costs $35 a person, which includes dinner and entertainment. Call Town Hall to purchase tickets at 397-5538.

Next Tuesday, there will be a free open house 50th Anniversary Commemoration and Wine and Cheese Reception in the Redington Shores Town Hall Community Room, 17425 Gulf Blvd., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The town will also hold a 50th anniversary parade on Oct. 8, starting from Town Hall and ending at Constitution Park for the Annual Town Picnic. The winner's float will feature Kids Fun Day Champions, bands, vintage cars, clowns, kids on bikes/boards/skates.

The 50th anniversary logo items, including T-shirts, ball hats and visors, are on sale at Town Hall for $10.

Gulfport

The fifth-annual Gulfport Gecko Fest will be held Sept. 3, from noon to 10 p.m. on Beach Boulevard. Entertainment will be provided by Wendy and the Soul Shakers, Dave on Drums, the Fallopian Tubes and many others. Gulfport's first Street Dance will be from 8 to 10 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Gulfport Merchants Association. Vendors or sponsors interested in participating should call Mike at 302-9299 or Emily at 510-6275.

Indian Rocks Beach

A community cleanup is being held this week. Residents should place materials to be picked up at the curb no later than 7 a.m. today for pickup by Friday. Items such as white goods, appliances, furniture, etc. will be picked up free, however, city crews will not pick up cars, boats, trailers, construction materials, stumps, tree removal material or hazardous waste items.

Church of the Isles United Church of Christ will celebrate Family Day for young families and school-age children on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. All-you-can-eat pizza and ice cream will be served. Meetings of young families, elementary, junior high and senior high students groups will plan future events. The event will be held at the Giddes Youth Center adjacent to the church at 200 24th Ave. For more information, call 595-1038.

The city will hold its semiannual town hall meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at the Indian Rocks Beach Civic Auditorium, 1507 Bay Palm Blvd. Issues that will be discussed include undergrounding of utilities, library expansion, and Gulf Boulevard redevelopment.

The Calvary Episcopal Church and Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue will sponsor a food drive for needy families from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sept. 12-16. Donations may be dropped off at 1615 First St., Indian Rocks Beach, or the following fire stations: Station 27, 304 First St. IRB, Station 28, 13501 94th Ave. N, Seminole, or Station 26, 17757 Gulf Blvd. Redington Shores. Madeira Beach

An island-style barbecue celebrating Labor Day will be held at the VFW Post 4256, 12901 Gulf Blvd., from noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 4 and 5. There will be live music, and a full menu. Donation is $5.50. Purchase tickets at the VFW, or call 397-3767 for more information.

South Pasadena

A free seminar, "Eight Little-Known Money-Traps that Routinely Cost Many Retirees Thousands," will be held Aug. 30, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay, 1255 Pasadena Ave. S. Redington Beach

St. Pete Beach

St. John Vianney Catholic Church will offer the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults beginning Sept. 7. Inquiry sessions for adults interested in learning more about the Catholic Church are offered Wednesdays, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Vianney Meeting Center. The Pinellas County Parks and Recreation Department will host a Sea Turtle Interpretive Program on Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Sand Key Park, 1060 Gulf Blvd. Participants will learn about sea turtles and their nesting habits. The classes will include a guided beach hike, information on steps to be followed when a turtle nest is discovered and why lights on the beach may be hazardous to baby sea turtles. The program also includes a walk to the shore to see bird nesting areas and sea turtle nests. A question and answer session will follow each presentation. For more information, call 464-3347.

Treasure Island

Artists have until Sept. 1 to enter paintings in the Art Guild's September show scheduled Sept. 10 at the City Hall auditorium. Up to two entries from Guild members will be accepted from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 1. Memberships are available at $25. The Art Show will feature Tina Saylor demonstrating faux finishes on panels.
