VALRICO - Students and staff at Valrico Elementary School were evacuated this morning for a reported gas leak in the cafeteria.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to the 10:15 a.m. call and shut off gas to the building, while the hazardous materials team investigated the cause of the gas leak.

About a hundred kindergarten students were in the cafeteria and had just been served lunch, said Linda Cobbe, school district spokeswoman.

Six cafeteria workers were treated on scene for complaints of nausea and dizziness, typical symptoms of exposure to natural gas, said Hillsborough Fire Rescue spokesman Ray Yeakley.

By 11:30 a.m. Thursday, about an hour after the call, students and staff were back inside the elementary school, and fire rescue vehicles had left.

Fire and school officials will investigate what caused the gas leak, Yeakley said. An investigation as to how much gas leaked is ongoing.
