Pinellas moves football games to Thursday

Due to Hurricane Katrina, school officials moved all eight season opener games.

Because of the size of tropical storm Katrina and its unpredictable path, Pinellas County school officials decided to move all eight games involving public schools up to tonight.

The games will start at 7:30 p.m.

A private school game between Calvary Christian and Northside Christian also will be played tonight at 7:30. Three private school games remain scheduled for Friday.

"The playing conditions will be drastically different tomorrow night," said county superintendent Clayton Wilcox. "Playing our games tonight will be safer for our players, coaches, cheerleaders and band members."

Tropical storm Katrina gathered strength Thursday during its slow creep through Florida's southeastern coast after drenching the Bahamas.

This is the third straight year the county football schedule has been jostled because of the path of a storm. In 2003, the start of the football season was delayed because of Tropical Storm Henri. Last season, Hurricane Frances wiped out the slate of games the first week. Most were eventually made up in Week 11.
