Hernando County emergency officials maintained a wait-and-see attitude on Hurricane Katrina Thursday evening, asking residents to stay informed and prepared.

Emergency officials planned to discuss this afternoon whether to consider opening public shelters, opening the county emergency management center and other precautions.

The storm forced the cancellation of a football game Hernando Christian Academy planned to play Saturday in Coral Springs, which is near where Katrina was expected to make landfall. The game will not be rescheduled, school officials said.

Residents concerned about flooding can obtain sandbags at the Hernando Beach Fire Department, Brooksville Fire Department and Ridge Manor Community Center. Updated information can be found at the county's emergency operations Web site, http://www.co.hernando.fl.us/EOC/ or the public information line, 352 754-4111.

Compiled by staff writers Rick Gershman and Vincent Thomas.
