LARGO - After an investigation by the state Department of Health, a Largo woman was arrested Wednesday, charged with practicing dental hygiene without a license.
Rosemary Disney, 53, was released from the Pinellas County Jail Wednesday after posting a $2,500 bond. Disney worked as a hygienist for several years at Dr. Kevin Doherty's dental office at 1200 S Highland Ave. in Clearwater, according to an affidavit signed by Timothy Tate, an investigator with the state Department of Health.
According to the affidavit, a couple identified as Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Smyth experienced permanent damage from the multiple cleanings Disney gave them. Their injuries required treatment from other specialists.
Disney declined to comment when reached by phone Thursday, saying she wanted to consult her attorney.
Patients of Doherty's since 2001, the Smyths believed Disney was a licensed hygienist, according to the affidavit. Disney cleaned their teeth several times.
Reached by phone Thursday, Mrs. Smyth declined to comment.
The affidavit said Disney told Department of Health investigator Dave Berry that she had been a dental hygienist in Doherty's office for several years and that as part of her job, she did cleanings and fluoride treatments.
She also told Berry that Doherty was aware she was not licensed as a dental hygienist.
Doherty's office was closed Wednesday and Thursday and he could not be reached for comment. Based on the affidavit, a circuit court judge issued a warrant for Disney's arrest.
Times researcher Angie Drobnic Holan contributed to this report.
