Williams Jr. rolls to St. Petersburg Open championship

LARGO - Walter Ray Williams Jr., the richest man in the sport, captured the $3,000 champions purse in the PBA Miller Lite Greater St. Petersburg Open at Liberty Lanes last weekend.

Williams, of Ocala, defeated Virginia's David Hungate in the final en route to posting a 7-2 tournament record. Williams had a total of 5,139 pins in 22 games, nearly 200 pins better than Hungate and the rest of the competition.

Titusville's Jason Hurd, a recent regional champion, finished sixth after 18 games.

Rick Langton, a Seminole High School graduate, knocked down 3,297 pins in 16 games but was 0-3 in duals and placed 16th. He received $600.

St. Petersburg's Bill Hicks claimed 20th and $400 in 13 games. Darryl Dempsey, St. Petersburg, and Brett Frisse Largo, took 32nd and 35th, respectively, for $400 each.

Largo's Greg Ickes (40th), Clearwater's William Wilder Jr. (42nd) and St. Petersburg's Keith Glasgow (46th) also were in the 110-player field.COMING UP: AMF Clearwater Lanes is taking registrations for the Dick Weber Scholarship League.

Players 9-18 can enter Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-noon at the center. The 16-week league starts Sept. 10 and bowls every Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

The competition will consist of 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18 divisions, and the bowlers will be vying for scholarship money and USBC awards.

The NABI's Club 570 will be at Seminole Lanes on Sunday. The squad times are 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with semifinals and finals to follow. This week's jackpot is $295, with a strike pot of $176.

HIGH SCORERS: At Twedt's Lanes in Largo, Gysin Bardo (694 series), Daryl Slater (689), Joe Alore (673), Danny Bolton (670), Tod Janssen (654), Scott Hager (640), Dave Lawson (630), Lance Lonsdale (625), Dick Correa (620) and Mark Misura (619) led the men.

The women's leaders were Dee Watkins (630), Kay McAleer (605), Michelle Huff (580), Carol George (568) and Maxine Huff (563).

At Dunedin Lanes, Lori Smith bowled a 277 game and finished with a 652 series to head the women's competition.

Nick Vollentine produced his second 300 game of the summer to capture men's honors. Fuzzy Hanes had a 260 game and 681 series to top the seniors.

At Sunrise Lanes in St. Petersburg, Drew Beierlein topped all bowlers with a 300 game and 795 series.

Robin Higgins turned in 247 and 604, respectively.

Other top showings for the men were enjoyed by Tommy Turner (300 game, 761 series), Tony Madden (265, 257, 235-757), Shawn Heffner (278 game), Dan George (277), John Genevie (270), Mike McMahan (270), Al Natale (213), Derek Dzierba (760 series), John Gesellj (736), Mike Cornelison (725), Ben Johnston (702) and Rick Hoover (701). Also on the women's side, Lori Harmon logged a 244 game and 569 series.

At Seminole Lanes, 81-year-old Don Douglas, a charter member of the Seniors Stars, rolled 226, 249, 194 and 279 for a 948 series.

Stan Dzierba, who carded a perfect game last week at Sunrise, delivered 11 straight strikes en route to a 298 performance.
