  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Tonight's games

All games at 7:30 p.m.

PASCO (0-0) AT SPRINGSTEAD (0-0)

WHERE: Booster Stadium.

SERIES: Pasco leads 9-1.

NEED TO KNOW: Pasco's defense swarmed River Ridge last week in a 27-0 preseason classic victory. The Pirates forced several turnovers and held the Royal Knights to 3 yards of offense. Pasco's offense struggled with its passing game. Starting quarterback Tony Smith still looked sharp running the ball for 104 yards and a touchdown. Caparaso said the Pirates made it through the preseason without significant injury. Springstead coach Bill Vonada said despite concerns Pasco had with Hurricane Katrina, Hernando County athletic directors felt comfortable Wednesday allowing Friday's games to go on as scheduled. The Eagles fell hard in a 28-6 loss to Land O' Lakes in a preseason classic. Springstead's lone highlight was a run by quarterback John Hogeland for a touchdown. Vonada said he has no significant injuries or lineup changes.

FRANK PASTOR'S PICK: Pasco

IZZY GOULD'S PICK: Pasco

STEVE LEE'S PICK: Pasco

LAND O'LAKES (0-0) AT ZEPHYRHILLS (0-0)

WHERE: Bulldog Stadium.

SERIES: Land O' Lakes leads the series 15-12.

NEED TO KNOW: Zephyrhills enters tonight's game confident it can compete with big schools despite yielding more than 300 yards of offense in a 25-21 preseason loss to Plant City. Anyone scouting the Bulldogs knows they will do what they can to get the football to Bryan Thomas. The senior Division I prospect had an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Plant City and caught a 43-yard TD strike from junior Sederrik Cunningham. Fisher must cope with the loss of sophomore running back Scott Weitzel, who suffered a sprained ankle against Plant City. He is doubtful for tonight's game. Land O' Lakes could take advantage with its big-play capability and quarterback Joe Weatherford. With deep threat Develin Robinson and tight end Caz Piurowski, the Gators should have one of the better passing combinations. Tailback Even Keel, fullback John Weatherford and flanker Brad Patton also will get their touches behind a mostly untested offensive line. Still, look for the Gators to score plenty.

FRANK PASTOR'S PICK: Land O'Lakes

IZZY GOULD'S PICK: Land O' Lakes

STEVE LEE'S PICK: Land O'Lakes

CORRECTION
