Victim of stabbing 'recovering nicely'

The woman left the hospital Thursday. The ex-boyfriend accused of stabbing her is in jail.

NEW PORT RICHEY - Wednesday afternoon's stabbing victim, Donna Johnston, was released Thursday morning from St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.

"She's doing fine. She's recovering nicely, as well as can be expected, thank the dear Lord," said a man who answered the phone at her home Thursday afternoon. He declined to give his name.

Johnston, 48, had called for help as soon as she saw her ex-boyfriend Nick Altamuro Jr. walk up to her house Wednesday afternoon.

Three minutes later, sheriff's deputies found her stabbed multiple times, and they accused Altamuro of trying to kill her.

When paramedics carried her on a stretcher past Altamuro, authorities say, he tried to lunge at his ex-girlfriend again.

Deputies already had been looking for the 46-year-old Holiday man because of two arrest warrants for violating protective orders.

Altamuro, of 1836 Hacienda Way, faces charges of attempted murder and violating a domestic violence injunction. He is being held without bail in the county jail.
