PHOENIX - Michael Tucker joined the Phillies on Sunday, surprised to be traded this late in the season but eager to help his new team in the stretch run for a playoff berth.
"It's something that happened going into September, not July," Tucker said before the Phillies faced Arizona on Sunday night. "They have a good core of guys.
"I'm just trying to come in and fit in. I'm trying not to mess up anything they've got going right now."
To make room, the Phillies placed right-hander Cory Lidle on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Thursday.
Tucker, 34, was hitting .240 in his 10th season, with five home runs and 33 RBIs for San Francisco. In his second season with the Giants, his playing time had diminished.
Jim Thome , recovering from elbow surgery, was moved to the 60-day DL to open a spot for Tucker on the 40-man roster.
CARDINALS: Outfielder Jim Edmonds left after a collision at home plate while scoring on a double steal in the sixth. His right knee hit one of catcher Gary Bennett 's shin guards.
CUBS: The team retired Ryne Sandberg 's jersey before the game against Florida, making the Hall of Fame second baseman the fourth Cub to receive the honor. Nearly a month after his induction in Cooperstown, the 10-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glove winner and 1984 MVP was given a standing ovation and received a framed replica jersey. His No.23 joins Ernie Banks (14), Ron Santo (10) and Billy Williams (26) as retired Cubs jerseys.
MARINERS: Slugger Richie Sexson came out of the game in the second inning with blurred vision in his right eye. He said he woke up with the problem and didn't know what caused it.
ORIOLES: Outfielder Sammy Sosa (toe) went on the DL. First baseman Alejandro Freire was recalled from Triple A.
PADRES: Rightfielder Brian Giles left the game against the Rockies in the third after a collision with centerfielder Dave Roberts . Giles was diagnosed with a bruised right knee.
PIRATES: Outfielder/first baseman Craig Wilson was activated after healing from a broken bone in his left hand. Rookie outfielder Chris Duffy (torn left hamstring) went on the DL.
RANGERS: Righty Edison Volquez , one of the club's top minor-league prospects, will make his first major-league start in Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox, manager Buck Showalter said.
RED SOX: Closer Keith Foulke made his second rehab appearance at Class A Lowell, allowing one run in his only inning of work. Also, the team designated left-hander Mike Remlinger for assignment 19 days after obtaining him and recalled lefty Abe Alvarez from Triple-A Pawtucket. Remlinger had a 14.85 ERA and no record in eight relief appearances since being acquired from the Cubs for minor-league pitcher Olivo Astacio . Alvarez pitched a perfect ninth in his first major-league relief appearance. He started once in 2004.
HURRICANE PREPARATION: Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt was scheduled to work third base in the Twins-Rangers game but instead returned to his New Orleans home in anticipation of Hurricane Katrina. The game went on with three umpires.
