Belleair's Andrea Messer managed Sunday's strong winds in the eighth Sam Parks Junior Invitational.

Messer produced a final-round 78 for 149 and the girls title at Belleair Country Club.

The Largo High School sophomore was playing in the 13-15 division but had the best girls score in the invitational, including a 16-18 class.

Though Messer recorded only two birdies in the round Sunday, it was her short game that kept her in the lead.

"I got up and down six or seven times to save par today," said Messer, who was coming off a tie for first with teammate Evan Jensen at the Innisbrook Classic in Palm Harbor.

"One of the best saves was pitching from 100 yards on the (par-4) 18th to within 20 feet and sinking the breaking putt," Messer said. "This win will help boost my junior ranking."

Messer's overall championship elevated Coral Springs' Alexis Thompson (77-75-152) to first in the 13-15 competition and Jensen (77-78-155) to second.

Northside Christian teammates Danielle Jackson and Sophie Dembroski finished 1-2 in the 16-18 division. Jackson carded 76-79-155 and Dembroski 157.

Competition for the boys crown was the keenest, as four tied after 36 holes with 6-over 148.

The survivors were Countryside High players Zach Walters and Mark Wilkins , plus Matt Hebert of Lithia and Joel Durrance of Ocala.

Close to 8 p.m., the four teed off on the 417-yard No.1 hole to settle the issue, under the supervision of tournament official Bill Conway . However, with all four making par and darkness upon them, the decision was made to have a chip-off to determine the winner.

From 60 feet, Durrance and Walters came closest and forced a measurement. Durrance, a Forest High senior and the team's No.2 player, captured the coveted trophy as his chip was 6 feet from the pin.

"This is my first big win, so it means a lot to me," Durrance said.

"The conditions were really tough today; hot, humid and windy - the toughest wind I've ever played in, especially since we had to go 22 holes with the carryover from Saturday. This does a lot for my confidence."

Rick Kittelstad of Lutz won (77-75-152) the 13-15 class. Coral Springs' Curtis Thompson (155) was the runner-up based on a match of scorecards with Seminole's Chad Fleming , Tampa's Jack Twomey and Riverview's Ian McConnell .

Ryan Orr , 10, of Belleair, captured the Futures Flight for youngsters with an 86-92-178 performance.

PRO TOURS: Brittany Lincicome finished strong with a 4-under 68 that helped her receive a share of 31st in the LPGA Wendy's Classic in Dublin, Ohio.

Her four-round 279 moved Lincicome to 63rd on the money list with $123,792. The top 90 retain or earn exempt status on the 2006 tour.

Greg Kraft , Clearwater, is 15th on the Nationwide money list at $153,856. The top 20 receive exemption onto the 2006 PGA Tour.

Jenny Gleason placed 57th in the Future Tour's YMCA Classic in York, Pa., to complete the season in sixth with $34,138. The top five move on to the 2006 LPGA Tour.

NORTH FLORIDA PGA: Jeff Leonard of Temple Terrace Golf Center shot 2-under 214 (72-69-73) and tied for third in last week's Section Championship at Grand Cypress in Orlando.

Leonard received $1,600 for his high finish among north Florida club and teaching pros.

Jacksonville's Clint Avret survived Thursday's wind-blown final round and carded 76 for a three-round 212 victory, one better than Rick Sargent of Kissimmee Golf Club.

Avret had opened with 6-under 66 and posted 70 the second day. In 54 holes, he made 13 birdies, 5 bogeys and 2 double bogeys. The win was worth $3,000.

Bill Shriver of Belleview Biltmore was the top Pinellas golfer at 217 for a ninth-place tie.

Belleair's Jim Slattery got a share of 32nd (225) and was followed by Tony Perez of Clearwater Executive (228), Jim Smith of Missing Links Range (230) and Dunedin's John Falcone (237).

Teaching pro Pat Maser of Belleview Biltmore entered the 27th annual tournament that was comprised predominately of men. She missed the 36-hole cut after a 79-77 showing, which was better than 32 males.

CGA: Scott Lynch teamed with Palm Harbor's Justin Meier for 5-under 67 and the victory in last week's better-ball of pair match at Cypress Run.

Meier, a member of the Tufts (Mass.) University squad, posted earlier this month at Lansbrook 4-under 68 with his own ball.

Mitch Bentley and Bill Pawlicki took Cypress Run's senior honors with 69. In overall net play, the teams of Jim Gruden and Harry Hummer and Eddie Grant and Dave Reber each logged 64.

On Thursday, Belleair's Matt Gesner emerged victorious with 68. Dalan Faren of New Port Richey took net honors, posting 65 with a 3 handicap.

Topping the seniors was Belleair's J.R. Robertson (71). The best net score (67) was shared by Jim Montali and Rick Lind .

FLORIDA STATE GA: Kelly Gosse of Inverness has been selected for the Sixth USGA State Team Championship, scheduled for Sept.27-28 at South Carolina's Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton.

He will be joined by Jacksonville's Steve Carter and Fort Lauderdale's Rick Woulfe .

Woulfe will be playing in his fifth USGA team event.

Gosse won the 2005 State Match-Play Championship earlier this month in Sarasota. He leads in points accumulated in FSGA and USGA competition. That's how players are selected for the state squad.

Tennessee is the defending champion.

Headed by current pro Brandt Snedeker , Tennessee won the 2003 match with Tim Jackson and Danny Green by four strokes over California. Florida finished 20th with Woulfe, Mike Nealy of Boca Raton and Andy Purnell of Jacksonville.

ELEVATION: Chris Slattery , an assistant pro at Countryside Country Club, has passed all the requirements to be promoted to PGA Class-A status.
