CRYSTAL RIVER - The Crystal River High volleyball team served up 31 aces in downing Ocala West Port High School 25-8, 25-16, 25-14 in a district contest Monday night at the Pirates' gym.
Crystal River (3-0, 1-0) used Cassidy Rash's 13 straight serve points to win the first game. Rash, a sophomore hitter, had six aces in that string. Brandy Worlton, a 6-3 hitter, hammered three of her match high 10 kills in the first contest. Junior setter Ashley Clark had 16 assists for the night.
Sarina Jaster hit five service points, four of them aces in the second contest. Jaster had 11 points overall.
Worlton had six straight service points with four aces to finish off the final match.
West Port (0-1, 0-1), was often lax on defense. Many points came when the Pirates hammered shots and West Port did not attempt to block.
"It's kind of nice because we could work on our offense a little bit," said Clark, the team setter. "It's sometimes a little tough (playing a team that doesn't play much defense)."
Crystal River coach Bridget Boshell was encouraged by the performance.
"It was a full team effort," Boshell said."They communicated well. They served rather well. We need to keep the ball in play and getting in our service points and letting the other team make the mistakes. When you are aggressive, it's hard not to tell your team to be aggressive."
