Gulfport Gecko Fest is Saturday

GULFPORT - The fifth annual Gulfport Gecko Fest will be held from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday on Beach Boulevard. Wendy and the Soulshakers, Dave on Drums, the Fallopian Tubes and many others will provide entertainment. Gulfport's first street dance will be from 8 to 10 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Gulfport Merchants Association. Vendors or sponsors interested in participating can call Mike at 302-9299 or Emily at 510-6275.

Indian Rocks Beach

The city will hold its semiannual town hall meeting at 7 tonight at the Indian Rocks Beach Civic Auditorium, 1507 Bay Palm Blvd. Issues to be discussed include burial of utility lines, library expansion and Gulf Boulevard redevelopment.

Calvary Episcopal Church and Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue will sponsor a food drive for needy families from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 12-16. Donations may be dropped off at 1615 First St., Indian Rocks Beach, or at fire Station 27, 304 First St., Indian Rocks Beach; Station 28, 13501 94th Ave. N, Seminole; and Station 26, 17757 Gulf Blvd., Redington Shores. The 2005 Wellness Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at Calvary Episcopal Church, 1615 First St. Free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, hearing, prostate health, personal wellness and cardiac risk will be available. Bring the children for fun activities and prizes. The event is open to the entire beach community and is sponsored by Morton Plant Mease Health Care and Calvary WinterFest Ministry 2005. Madeira Beach

An island-style barbecue celebrating Labor Day will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday at VFW Post 4256, 12901 Gulf Blvd. There will be live music and a full menu. Donation is $5.50. Buy tickets at the VFW or call 397-3767 for more information.

Redington Shores

The town's 50th anniversary Luau on the Beach, originally scheduled for last Saturday, has been rescheduled for Nov. 5. But the 50th anniversary parade will still be held Oct. 8, starting at Town Hall and ending at Constitution Park for the town picnic. The winner's float will feature Kids Fun Day champions, bands, vintage cars, clowns, and kids on bikes, boards and skates. Anniversary T-shirts, ball hats and visors are on sale at town hall for $10. St. Pete Beach

St. John Vianney Catholic Church will offer the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults beginning Sept. 7. South Pasadena

Treasure Island

Artists have until Thursday to enter up to two paintings in the Art Guild's September show, "Many Happy Returns," which will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 10 at the City Hall auditorium, 120 108th Ave. Paintings from guild members will be accepted from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m Thursday. Memberships are available for $25. The art show will feature Tina Saylor demonstrating faux finishes on panels. The art show is open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The second annual 9/11 Children's Fund Benefit Show will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Thunderbird Resort Hotel, 10700 Gulf Blvd. The show will feature the Suns of the Beach: Darrell "The Dune Doctor" Clanton and Chuck "King of the Beach" Cobb. Door prizes will be raffled all afternoon, with a grand prize benefit auction at sunset. Proceeds from the day's event will be donated to the Sept. 11, 2001, Children's Fund Inc. The Treasure Island Action Club will hold its first meeting of the season at 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Community Center. The program will feature the "Dipsy & Doodle" mother-daughter clown team. The club is open to people older than 55 who live in Treasure Island for at least three months each year. Meetings are held monthly except during the summer. Members also go to theaters and area attractions. For information, call club president John Barr at 367-4264.
