Walking club offers cool activity

SEMINOLE - If you want to walk, but can't stand the Florida heat and humidity, the Seminole Recreation Center has a suggestion: Join its new Walking Club, get your exercise in a climate-controlled environment and make some new friends at the same time.
The Walking Club will meet from 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Sept. 6. Participants must have a recreation card to join the air-conditioned fun. The recreation center is at 9100 113th St. N. For more information, call Dan at 391-8345.

The ninth annual Music in the Park series of free evening concerts will be held on six consecutive Friday nights from 7 to 9 p.m Sept. 9 to Oct. 14 at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road. Each concert features a different genre. Future concerts include:
Sept. 9: Big Band sound as interpreted by Grammy Award nominee Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra; presented by Freedom Square.
Sept. 16: Tropical and Classic Rock by DeLei'ed Parrots; presented by Park Auto Mall.
Sept. 23: Jazz/New Age by Dagari; presented by Waste Management of Pinellas.
Sept. 30: Motown Tribute by Uptown Review; presented by Keller Williams Gulf Coast Realty.
Oct. 7: Oldies rock 'n' roll by Ocean Road Band; presented by Lake Seminole Square.
Oct. 14: Swing and jazz by Lounge Cat; presented by Seminole Lake Rotary Club.
Attendees should bring blankets or chairs. Food and beverages will be available for sale. Alcoholic beverages and glass containers are not permitted in the park. For more information, call Steve Malla, recreation program coordinator, at 391-8345.

The Seminole Library is sponsoring Classic Movie Matinees on Thursdays beginning at 2 p.m. The movie events include free popcorn and a soft drink. Sept. 1, I Remember Mama; Sept. 8, Beneath the Twelve-Mile Reef; Sept. 15, Move Over Darling; Sept. 22, You Can't Take It With You; Sept. 29, Born Yesterday.

Clam Bayou Jazz Band, sponsored by the Friends of the Library; 3 p.m. Sept. 11.
We Love Dogs!, Tuesday, fun dog stories, trivia, games and more; 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27. Register in the youth services department.
Constitution Day/Week: a public recitation of the Preamble to the Constitution in the library lobby, followed by a presentation of the Constitution in the library meeting room; 2 p.m. Sept. 16.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Seminole but were afraid to ask can be learned at the Seminole Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Sept. 15. Jimmy Vines, a science teacher at Seminole High School and historian for the newly formed Seminole Historical Society, will discuss life in the early days of Seminole, the main families who settled the area, and how the Seminole Historical Society plans to preserve these events. A family pool party, "Seminole's Family Feuds," will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Seminole Family Aquatic Center, 9100 113th St. N. The fee is $5 a family. Participants must have a recreation card or be a guest of a member. Families will compete with each other in glow-in-the dark volleyball, water basketball, Scattergories and water relay games and races. For more information, call 397-6085.

The Seminole Chamber of Commerce is seeking sponsors and players for its four-person scramble golf tournament scheduled for Oct. 20 at the Seminole Lake Country Club. Entries cost $100 per person, which covers greens fee, cart, dinner and a chance for prizes. Golf holes marketing signs can be purchased for $50 for one sign or $100 for three signs. Pinellas County Sunstar Emergency Medical Services will offer free three-hour CPR classes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays on Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17. Seminole's Annual Community Halloween Trick or Treat event needs community and business sponsors. This year's "Field of Screams" will be held at the Holland G. Magnum Recreation Complex, 9100 113th St. N, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 28. Activities will include a Spook Zone Interactive Play Area, Spooky Theater, a haunted trail and a costume contest.
Business and community groups will be given free space on the soccer fields to set up a Halloween-themed booth or table to pass out candy to children. The trick or treat zone is limited to the first 30 businesses or groups to register. The deadline to register is Sept. 30. For more information, call recreation director Jim Sheets at 391-8345.
